According to that my 'Vette will go 288 miles on a single tank costing around $49.50. This is figuring $2.75/ gallon. The calculator didn't have my Yukon on it but from my own evaluation, I average around 14 mpg. Usually will cost me around $70 to fill up and I'll go about 360ish miles on a single tank.
There's a diesel BMW 320D that gets over 1000 miles a tank, of course you can't buy that here in the USA. My gas bimmer does fairly well and is very fun to drive. On the highways with consistant flow, I am sure it'd get close to 400 miles a tank and no where near that in the city.
1989 K2500 Chevy Suburban: 40 gallon tank @ 15MPG = 600 miles per tank.
Not quite as good as the newer Suburban my wife had, which has a 42 gallon tank and gets 22MPG on the freeway. My ass gives out LONG before the tank of gas.

My 1993 Suburban always get 16>19 avg mpg on trips so I've gotten as much as 750 mi. ,with no stops, on a trip with 45 gal tank across Kansas at night. (My God, Kansas a barren place at night! )
I think they just shoot to get you around 300 mile range per tank since it cost fuel to carry fuel, not to mention space. In the USA, not sure you can drive 50 miles in the most desolate highway without seeing a fuel station and on most highways, I think it's every 20 miles.
