My freon was slowly leaking for more than a month that I didn't know, and my mechanic who replaced my engine by pushing the ac lines aside, didn't drain the coolant, and didn't detect a leak (all over the driveway) when I advised him, "no cold air", last week. Yesterday an ac specialist poured colored liquid onto the black hose, and small fissures acted like small fountains exploded with what was left of my freon. Possibly, that's the problem at hand for your vehicle. I was advised that as the pulley belt is totally moveable, the condenser is good.
As the ac pro stated the black hose is a Chrysler defect, he is making a hose, and will replace mine and fill the ac with fresh freon for $250.
Questjon for me: If google shows the refrigerant hose at $49, and a can of freon at $40, and the hose metal ends pop in, taking a few seconds, a minute at the most, to install, why on earth is the cost $250?

A rather "open" question, Zhang . . .

Without knowing which part / component is guilty of leaking, all responses will be wild guesses.

Leak/service about 100-140 bucks. They usually changed a filter and some rings then recharged the system.
Replacing compressors (on two cars) $400 and $650 which included replacement dryer. I never had to replace a condenser or evaporator.

I live in a warm state. Working AC system is a given.

I'm assuming he is charging you for labor, Freon, and hose that is where the extra cost is coming from. Sounds like a fair price for the work that needs to be done. I do all my own AC work save money I would just let that guy do it.

i had refrigerant put in my car but it was only cool a month or less. Some type of leak but I can't afford to get it fixed, I was wondering if the feon runs out even if the air is not on while driving or not driving? Thanks

Yes. If you have a leak, it's leaking regardless of being on or not. The rate at which it leaks may change depending on use though.

Problem is, with a leak, when the refrigerant comes out, moisture can get in. Moisture kills A/C systems. So you can keep adding a can here and there, but one day the leak will catch up to you when the moisture kills the A/C system for good. Then it will be a lot more expensive to repair, vs trying to fix the leak, pull a vacuum, and recharge now.

What does it mean if there is a sort of hissing sound in the rear when the AC is on? Its intermittent loud enough to be annoying...also the air is blowing NOT cold air. FYI my car is a 2011 Expedition XLT

My Honda had a very slow leak. I was adding about 6 oz every 8 months. Turned out to be a bad low pressure fill valve. It's basically the same as a tire valve.

Not giving advice.....but if your AC-system is depressurized already, you can do a lot of the work yourself. The main thing about AC is putting that pressurized refrigerant into the environment. But if your system is leaking anyways and you throw a gauge onto your AC and it is at 0, not too much harm in doing your own work (plug refrigerant sources while doing the work, of course).
