My '05 Toyota Sienna recently started making a strange sound when turning. When my husband (who is usually driving) describes the sound, he says it is like a grating or clinking. From the passenger seat, it sounds almost like liquid glugging from a metal container with a small mouth (so the pitch is somewhat high and tinny). It only occurs when turning and comes from the driver's side lower front of the vehicle. The driver can feel a slight vibration in the steering wheel when the sound occurs. The sound seems to get faster further into the turn.

Any ideas?

No doubt about it, it is a CV joint. Most likely a boot that protects the joint, and keeps the lube in got torn. It's not an expensive fix. You should have it fixed asap.

since this is a job best done at a Toyota dealer to won't be cheap but for the work done it will be worth it. Don't drive to long with this problem lest the joint fail completely and you loose control of the vehicle.

That's BS.
Any good independent shop can do this repair and it will be cheaper than a Toyota dealer. A rebuilt axle assembly is cheaper and better than just replacing the noisy joint.

And for the joint to fail and cause you to lose control, more BS. Just have it repaired as soon as you can.

Can't speak for your mechanic but most axles usually run between $200-250 installed.

Am I assuming correctly that this van will need a front-end alignment after the new axle is installed?

If done right, it shouldn't need a FEA.

Apparently I've never done it quite right enough - except for a Hyundai Sonata.

Yeah, keep an eye on them from here on out. Yotas and Hondas eat up CV axles like you wouldn't believe. I have family with an Accord that have gone through 3 so far. The current ones are bad but they've been driving on them for about a year so you'll be fine if you can't replace them right now.
