I'll throw this one out there as an extreme long-shot...

Could it be your cooling fan clutch? If that thing hasn't at least "semi-disengaged" it can create quite a noise when the engine is up to speed.

Just a thought.

Another good point !! Could be a viscous fan problem.
I had a viscous fail on a BMW, and it was so annoying trying to trace it !!

Huh... don't know, that had not occurred to me. Should be easy enough to check. I kind of think it's not though, because the fan would not stop when I pull over and the vehicle isn't rolling. Long as the engine is on anyway.

In the case of this noise, it stops as soon as the wheels stop turning, but then I can immediately start rolling again and it will be gone. It generally sounds like tire wear howl, but I've had the tires checked. A few times when its happened I have mistaken it for the sound of something with a small high revving motor trying to pass me on the passenger side. I've crawled around underneath looking for obvious culprits to no avail. I'm just trying to determine what to take apart first

Check to see if that wheel is heating up while you're driving.

It has happened thirty seconds after starting out of my driveway on a cold winter morning, and three hours down the road on a warm day. In other words, random times at random speeds, random temperature, and random weather conditions.
