This rattling sound goes away when the engine gets warm (i.e. the engine temperature gauge gets to the midway point between Hot and Cold). Is there a way to make this pre-engine warmup noise go away?

You are probably getting some hydraulic valve clatter, usually changing the weight of the oil can resolve the problem, best bet is to go to the car forum related to your car and do a search for HLA noise.

Model, make and year info would help us figure out what's going on.

Try to take a video or a recording, if you can.

Noises are impossible to describe, because your "clink-clink" might sound more like a "rattle-rattle" to us.

Because they're impossible to describe, they're also impossible to diagnose without actually hearing them.

Most newer cars do a quick self-diagnosis and check of some components directly upon startup- i.e. antilock brakes and such so that some noises that you may hear could be that.

As previous poster said without more info. its pretty impossible to determine.

This is a 99 Chevy Prizm, and the technical term for the noise I'm encountering is, I guess, "pinging". It only occurs when I apply gas before the engine has warmed up, not while at idle. So here I am, barreling down the city streets at the insane speed of 20 mph, and the engine is pinging like crazy. But when the engine warms up, and I'm getting up to speed on the on-ramp to the freeway (accelerating from about 30 mph to about 60 mph), there's no pinging. The strange thing about this is that my previous experience with pinging was while driving a Mercury Topaz (which has what might charitably be described an engine designed for city driving) at highway speeds - I got it while applying gas, but only while going from 30 to 60.

From the description, it certainly sounds like pinging.

Normally pinging happens when the ignition timing is incorrect, but I'd expect yours to be set by the ECU.

Hard to say a cause, are you using the correct octane fuel ? This can make a huge difference.
I'm not sure how US fuel works, but, from what I understand, if you're fuelling regular, and it wants super (or vice versa) this could be a potential cause.

Weirdly enough, now that I think of it, that was how I reduced the amount of pinging I got with the Topaz all those years ago - filling it up with premium gas.

When was the last oil change, and what weight of oil did you use or have put in? Is it 'clacking' (like a diesel)?

Mike

I got it changed at my mechanic. I assume he used either 5W30 (recommended) or at worst, 10W30.
