Tried that. When you are driving down a two lane, you don't have fast and slow lanes. A lot of the times when you do slow down, they stay right behind you and won't pass when they do have the chance too. Some people do it to **** you off or TEACH YOU a lesson for not rolling fast enough.
So if they did end up hitting me and wanted to start a verbal or physical confrontation I will be ready. It's not fantasy talk. I have a sidekick that stays behind my seat for such situations.
Yes, that is why I said ignore them.
Although I'd be more alert for stopping smoothly. They can tailgate me all they want, it will not effect me one way or the other. I will not speed up to accomadate them, I will not slow down to "teach them a lesson". I will allow them to pass if possible and not play stupid games. Generally, when people realize their attempts to **** me off or intemidate me has zero effect, they relax. If they hit me, I have a camera ready to take pics of their plates and have the insurance company deal with them.
I am a big guy and I can handle situations, but it occurred to me a long time ago that some people really don't give a **** and completely lose control. I maintain control for the most part and stand my ground. Someone wants to get in a verbal confrontation with you over the collision? Call the cops and inform them of the accident and the crazy person yelling at you. Don't be a dumb ass and loose control like them. Get down their plates and details about their car and them.
Actually, i don't know if it's just a UK thing, but more often than not, if there's a car sitting too close to me, it's a woman driving it.
I don't know what it is, i'm not anti-women drivers, but this seems to be the one thing they do consistently.
I know there's something about women having less spatial awareness than men, so I wonder if it's to do with that, maybe they just don't realise they are too close.
Shooting some one for a minor road incident? you might want to check just how much of the law would be on your side..
This is the quote from the OP, "If he'd hit me, I probably would have literally beat him to death."
There's a lot of whack jobs out there. If someone was attempting to beat me to death for tailgating, I would pull out my pistol and kill the bastard.
I was illustrating a point that if you want to act like Mr. Big Shot, think twice or else you might be endangering your life over a trivial reason. Ask yourself if it's worth escalating the situation to that level. It goes both ways too. There was a tailgater who got so outraged that when he finally passed the car, he threw a bottle at the other person, which ended up causing a huge traffic accident with multiple deaths. Like I said in my previous response...swallow your pride...it goes for both sides.
*this was in response to the OP's ridiculous testosterone driven statement*
This thread reminds me of a drive we took to a casino in the NE corner of our state. This was quite a few years ago on a two lane blacktop highway.
Some kid came up behind us like gangbusters and sat on my bumper. I slowed down to the speed limit and he stayed there. I slowed down to 10 under and he took off around me at the first opportunity flipping me off on the way by. My laughing at him didn't help his mood much.
A few miles down the road and there he is, pulled over and getting a ticket. We honked, smiled, and waved as we went by. He was not happy.
A few more miles down the road and here comes again. He flies by us and flips us off. Of course I saw him coming so we waved and laughed.
Yet a few more miles down the road and there he is. This time he's in the back seat of the highway patrol car. We just waved and smiled as we drove by.
Usually it's a big SUV or some POFS car. I just hammer the go fast pedal to the floor and listen to my Magnum's HEMI sing all the way to 135 or so and watch them disappear in the mirror. Of course only if there is no one in front of me and my V1 is not going off, and no wife in the passenger seat! So my solution is to put some distance between me and the tailgater.
If it's a truck, most are goverened at 100mph (stock tune). It's fun to go 105mph or so and watch them not able to go faster.
I just smoothly reach up and turn my rear-view mirror away from me to indicate that I'm not going to change my ways. It's especially effective against trucks at night when it reflects their headlights back at them.

I don't think deliberately blinding someone behind you esp. in a huge truck is a good idea. Then if you do need to stop fast in an emergency they can't see your brake light's and will smash into you at full speed.
On a motorcycle i weave coming to a red light and slow down hoping to not stop and the light will go green before i get there. The weaving is about being seen, not looking drunk.
The not stopping is in hope that a moving target is harder to hit. In Missouir somewhere just outside St Louis towing a trailer behind the bike, on some Golden mile they go 70 MPH between lights spaced 1/2 mile apart. I could go that fast easy, but with the trailer slowing down was a bear and some jerk was up my tail pipes. In the break down lane were orange barrels at the time and I went there to be the head of the line. I cut off every last one of them, Stopped for the red light stood up , looked back and offered the Royal Bird Salute.
The light went green and i went of to hit 45 the posted limit and no one passed, while the fast lane was there to do so.
When riding I have 0 room for anger.
