I like the current colorado with the 5.3 vortec. I mean hard to beat such a small truck with a small-block V8 under the hood.

according to the article, the Colorado is a medium size truck just a few thousand less than a full size Silverado and that's one of the reasons why it's sales are hurting,...that and it's thirsty under powered standard engine.

I was always miffed that GM ditched the tried and true vortec 4.3 liter V6 for a inline 5 which as the say has the power of a 4 cyl and get's the fuel mpg of a V8.

My dad had that engine in his S10 Blazer. He absolutely loved that engine and it's power delivery. I think they still use that engine in base Silverados but now with more power. That'd be a great optional engine for those who want to do some towing with a small truck. I wonder how GMs 3.6 engine would work in that truck though.

Part of the problem is that small/medium sizes trucks get near equal gas mileage of a full-size, half-ton truck. Here's the base price of a few small trucks as well as full-size, tell me what you'd buy for your dollar:

Ford Ranger XL - $17,820 MSRP
Ford F-150 XL - $21,820 MSRP

Chevy Colorado - $16,985 MSRP
Chevy Silverado - $20,850 MSRP

Dodge Dakota - $23,495 MSRP
Dodge Ram 1500 - $21,510 MSRP

Does something look wrong especially when a Ram 1500 is cheaper than a base Dakota? If a manufacturer wants to sell small trucks like the Ranger/Colorado/Dakota, their base price should be around the $14K-$15K mark rather than $17K-$23.5K. I still can't believe a base Dakota is more expensive than a base Ram 1500...boggles my mind!

well I guess with the extra $3K I would save buting the ram 1500 I would opt for the 390HP HEMI V-8
ro bad you can't get the 6-speed manual tranny with it...

The ranger is one tough rugged off-road truck and has a huge following compared to the colorado it has more to offer if you plan on using like a truck. the only thing the ranger lacks is a V8 option but who knows maybe ford will drop the new 5.0 into it

I do see why small trucks are not selling well I agree they should be selling in the 14-17K range not the 17-23K range because they compete with their full size couterparts

There's got to be a market for small trucks. Not many people need a full size pickup. Lots of guys in high school use to get those small trucks and trick them out then beat the hell out of them off road or road racing, you know, things that would totally destroy a car.

I agree in high school the thing to do was drop a 350 in a S-10 and beat on it but back then they were every where and small block chevy's were a dime a dozen in any wrecking yard. I also heard that because of the younger crowd insurance rates are higher for a ranger then a similer optioned F150.
