Just bought a used Mustang but it only came with one key. What is the least expensive way to get an additional key and what information do I need to do this?
I have to assume you bought a recent issue Mustang, if so.
You are a little screwed. You have to return to the dealer to get a new key programmed. Ford told me this is $300.
You may be able to reduce part of the cost. I bought a blank key with the chip on ebay for $15. Lowes cut it for free since it was my blank.
You can only reprogram the keys if you have two or more already programmed. I have heard on Ford Forums that some people have got the reprogramming done free or low cost by the dealer.
I would complain to the seller, they had a responsibility to give you two keys.
Everything ferretknoa told you is true, but if you have an older Mustang it could be as simple as going anywhere that makes keys and having a duplicate made. Not sure what year would be the cutoff, though.
Even non-programmed keys can be a problem. I bought an '01 Nissan from a private seller, and there was only one key, and it barely worked in the ignition and not at all in some of the doors. I took it to a locksmith, who pulled a lock our of a door and put it on his bench, and was able to reconstruct near-perfect keys. I think the whole deal cost about $40. Well worth every penny.
There is a little known pitfall to keys. If you have your ignition key on a fairly heavy ring of lots of keys and other doodads, the swinging motion of the key in the ignition as you drive will cause continuous friction inside the ignition keyhole, and fairly quickly wear your key down, and possibly, to some extent, the tumblers in the lock itself. Eventually, it will no longer work.
I had a BMW and it only cost me 15 or 20 dollars for the valet key, the main key would have cost me 200 dollars. Just go to the dealership and ask for the cheapest available key, if you want an original you might have some problems.

Like the above posters said, if it is a newer Mustang you can only get it at the dealer. My recommendation would be to go to the dealer and b**** and moan about the tard that sold you the car only gave you one key! "That SOB"!lol....... With any luck they will feel sorry for you and cut you one! It has worked for me before!
A spare key for a MINI Cooper requires you to take out another mortgage. And when you go to request one, you have to have 2,000 pieces of ID, your passport, and a permission slip from your mommy before they're convinced you own the car you parked out front.
Same as selling a car with the radio locked out on the code. Courts have held up that the seller must have it unlocked or disclose it on selling it.
The OP did not say who he bought it from, if repossessed the keys were unlikely recovered. Of course all this might have been disclosed to the OP.
