I have a 2010 Nissan Sentra, and Nissan recommends changing the oil every 3750 miles. I'm used to doing it about every 5000 miles. Am I voiding my warranty by not doing it on the 3750 marks? How often do you have to do it to keep a valid warranty?

Yeah change it according the manual to prevent warranty issues in the future. If you ever have a future warranty claim about your engine they will look for reasons not to cover it.

Surprised Nissan recommends changing oil at such a low interval (in today's world).

my car says every 7500 miles for "normal" driving conditions. "severe" conditions, 3000 miles. which seems to be every part of the U.S. according to Hyundai. but i am not doing that. i change every 5000m or so. sometimes a little less, but never more

my warranty? well, unless disaster strikes from 5000m oil changes in the next 25,000m, i don't worry about it

they'd also like me to service my car on "time intervals" instead of miles. meh to that, too

I've always done my oil at 5,000 miles, easier to remember it that way. For most of my working life I was putting 40,000 to 55,000 miles PER YEAR on my cars, same with the guys who worked for me. The likelihood of having an ENGINE problem with any modern car is pretty remote. It's the "accessories" that'll tend to cost you money, some are time related, some usage/miles related.

Many "old guys" like me remember our first cars from the '50s and '60s where engine problems prior to 80,000 miles were very common. Nothing at all unusual about doing rings and bearing prior to 100K, a valve job, maybe have a "wiped" lobe on a camshaft. While there have been some "troubled" engines in the last 25 years or so; Toyota oil sludging, weak crankshaft on 2.8 ltr GM V-6 etc, they are pretty rare.

Thinking back over my last "work" cars, here's the repairs I can remember;

2003 Nissan Maxima: 3.5 liter V6. Replaced fan blower motor at 70,000 miles-this was my last "work" car. I put 30,000 miles on it in 9 months and the next 40,000 in 6 years.

2,000 Mercury Grand Marquis: V8. Driver's power window assembly, about 100,000 miles, hairline cracks in manifold (common problem on that V-8). Sold car with 185,000 miles.

1997 Ford Crown Vic: V8 Same power window assembly, water pump at 140,000 miles, intake manifold. Sold car to one of my salesmen with 125,000, he drove it the next 100,000, don't recall him having any problems.

1995 Olds 88: 3.8 liter V6. Ignitors for spark plugs. Water pump. Sold at 13,000.

1992 (?) Jeep Cherokee. 4.0 liter straight 6. Water pump at about 100,000 and again at 170,000. Sold right after that.

1986 Jeep Cherokee. 2.8 Liter V6 (GM engine) Water pump about every 60,000 miles, not sure why on this unit since it was't a problem on anyone elses that I recall. Didn't make any difference if rebuilt or new. Rebuilt the alternator at 140,000, sold at 165,000. When I sold it there was an "occassional" sticking valve, but "repair in a can" treated the symptoms. The guy I sold it to was still driving it and happy when I move 3 years later. Last car I had with a carbeurator, auto choke sometimes acted up in winter, but we lived in TX so I lived with it, as did he.

1985 Chevy Celebrity, 2.8 liter V6. Water pump at 120,000, rebuilt alternator at 130,000. Sold at 155,000. A/C system at about 65,000 miles. This was in the early years of R134 systems and the compressor was aluminum. When it started to go it would contaminate the entire system so full replacement was the only RELIABLE/LASTING repair. Ignitors too IIRC.

Notice there is NO internal drive train repair on any of them. I always did my oil at 5,000, transmissions and differentials (when applicable) at 35,000 or 40,000.

I would follow the manual in order to keep your warranty intact. You don't want to give them any reason to weasel out on you. If something happens and they open her up they can tell if you did what you were supposed to do or not!

i agree.. you have to follow everything on the rule book. 3000 miles is a standard.

Just like everyone has said, follow the manufacturer's recommended schedule.

I do not believe Nissan recommends oil changes this frequently for a vehicle in normal use. This sounds like a severe use schedule.

Otherwise you should change it according to what the owners manual says.

The standard for what?

I don't believe any consumer vehicle today requires oil changes that frequently.

But Jiffy Lube likes oil changes every 3000 miles.

They do. Every 3750 miles.

Of course, that's pretty much the only service until 60K miles.
