8" & 9" Ford rear ends are pretty popular. They look nice too with the smooth back.
My old man prefers Chevy 10 bolt rear end. (Nearly every one he's ever built has had a 10 bolt posi)
I know a lot of folks like to get rear ends out of S-10 trucks.
Mustang II front ends are popular but if you've ever actually tried to cut one out of an actual Mustang II and mate it to a hot rod you may find that it's not as simple as some make it sound. The easiest way is to get a cross member from Heidts and go that route.....but I suppose that would be taking the 'rat' out of 'rat rod'. LOL
The old man once pulled the front end out of a Fiero trying to make that work out but in the end it wasn't quite what we were looking for. I think it may have been either too wide or too narrow hub-to-hub and the frame rails didn't line up where we needed them to. (The brakes were pretty cool looking though) Also aftermarket tubular A-arms weren't widely available like Mustang II.
But for the look of a rat rod it's hard to beat a good old fashioned I-beam front axle....and don't forget those finned drum brakes. LOL
I've heard S10 truck and Blazer frames, Mustang II front end suspensions, but what else?
Are we talking actual rat rods, or traditional hot rods? The two are very different (as are street rods). And what kind of body are we talking? '20s and '30s style? fat fender '40s style? '50s customs? Each use (and can use) different kinds of frames and suspensions.

Flaming River makes awesome steering boxes and front ends. I am also a huge fan of Stainless Steel Brakes as well is Wilwood. Flaming River Steering Components
