How is this allowed? Its unconstitutional and proof that our privacy is an illusion.
The government has been spying on me by having 'airlines' fly 'airplanes' over my house since I have been born. It's obviously just a ruse and the nanny state is spying on me.
Obviously, I own the air above where I live and the government shouldn't be intruding on me.
I recently had my water and electricity cut off because they were using that to spy on me as well.
My concern is less with privacy and more with cost. These drones are not cheap. How does the EPA justify the need for drones? Should we also supply every other dept or agency of the fed with them?
Dept of Education? WE need to ensure those play grounds are up to snuff and no non-pc activities are taking place. You know like playing cowboys and indians or something.
Dept of Energy? Fly over houses at night make sure no one is using 100 watt bulbs.
Secret service should be issued a few too.
US Marshals? Yes they need a dozen or so.
We better not use them to patrol our southern border though. That might interfer with operation fast and furious, worse still it mught make illegals feel unwelcome.
I doubt that. I realize that you're connected to the air industry in some way, so I'll leave it to you to prove that the FAA requires less air space for a drone than, say, a Cessna, especially in the middle of a crowded city and with a military base nearby (you responded directly to me, referencing my house specifically, so that's the scenario you have to support).

No, it didn't. You didn't provide a single shred of evidence that drones are treated any differently than any other aircraft with respect to the amount of air space required to use one.
In fact, the first document you linked to states, "The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), for example, urged us to develop rules for small UAS that require the same operational safety as manned aircraft."
You have yet to prove that the skies will be filled with drones watching our every move. I like you, Aero, but on this, you're just paranoid. If the government really wanted to spy in the way you're implying, they'd go all London on our butts and put cameras on every street corner.

Reason: tyop
Manned aircraft have been used for surveillance over private property for many years looking for things such as marijuana growing operations with little/no outcry from the public. Why does the lack of a living breathing pilot matter?
It doesn't matter. It should also be illegal for LE to spy on citizens using helicopters without a warrant.
So here's your outcry: IT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL FOR LE TO SPY ON PEOPLE USING DRONES OR MANNED AIRCRAFT WITHOUT A WARRANT JUST LIKE IT'S ILLEGAL TO USE A WIRETAP WITHOUT A WARRANT AND IT'S ILLEGAL TO ENTER MY HOUSE WITHOUT A WARRANT.
Speaking specifically to the credibility of the original source, Alex Jones has a long history of making up some pretty fantastic claims. A quick search through past threads around here will find some real doozies.
Do you not understand you have no expectation of privacy when out in public? In other words, if you have something to hide, don't be whining about getting caught if you're too stupid to hide it.
Since when did your homestead become "the public?" A drone flying over my house watching me read the newspaper on my front porch is breach of my privacy.
With the exception of you stating that they can put more of them in the air, NOBODY has raised a SINGLE difference between drones and helicopters. I've brought it up several times, and every time (sans your response, which I will look over more closely in a bit) my point has been ignored outright.
Like I said, I'd be with you if you were challenging all the bureaucratic red tape we have to deal with just to live our lives, and I'm generally in agreement with you on most of the topics I engage in on the forum, but on this, unless you're screaming just as loud about helicopters and satellites, I have to dismiss your concerns as paranoia.
This is not about bureacracy. If you can't discern the difference between a UAV and a helicopter, i'm not sure what more can be said to you. Two of the most glaring differences is sound and size. I'll leave it up to you to figure out why these two things matter, among the other considerable surveillance and operational advantages of UAV's over helicopters. That's why UAV's are different and are gaining in popularity among Big Brother advocates. I see no reason to engage your apathy any further if your mindset is such that you refuse to challenge your government.
Is Alex Jones certain that the drones were EPA? The Dept of Agriculture could be doing crop growth surveys at the behest of the farmers or checking on the proper use of Federal Range Land to prevent over grazing. If the EPA were using the drones they could be checking for Haz Waste spills from oil/gas fracking operations. A drone can cover a lot more ground than the people starved EPA.
There are more good reasons for using drones than reasons not to. Law enforcement is the least of them.
