Default News, Air Force C-17 Globemaster Cargo Plane Lands at Wrong Airport.

Woops.. Someone’s ass is in big trouble!

TAMPA – Air Force officials are trying to figure out why an Air Force C-17 Globemaster III cargo jet heading to MacDill Air Force Base instead landed at Peter O. Knight Airport this afternoon.

The plane, flown by a crew from the 305th Air Mobility Wing at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey, was arriving from Southwest Asia carrying 23 passengers and 19 crew when it made an “unscheduled landing,” according to Sgt David Carbajal, a McGuire spokesman. There appears to have been no damage to the aircraft or the airport, said Carbajal.

LOL! That reminds me of a 737 that landed at a small neighboring community airstrip instead of the larger airport 30 miles distant about 30 years ago. Lowell Ferguson brought Buffalo, Wyoming into the jet age, even if by mistake, and the community loved him for it. The Tuscaloosa News - Google News Archive Search

They went so far as to create a special annual celebration in his honor. Well, perhaps "create" is the wrong term. They changed "Crazy Days" to "Lowell Ferguson Days." Yes, he came back to help the community observe the day, over the objections of Western Airlines.

A friend of mine was the editor-publisher of Buffalo's weekly newspaper. He got a call from the excited airport operator that night: "Jim, you should get a picture of this. A Western Airlines jet just landed out here!"

"Western Airlines?" Jim asked in amazement. "Are you sure?"

"Well," the FBO replied, "it's huge and has a big 'W' on the tail."

To which Jim responded, "You sure it isn't a Winnebago?"

I have seen c17s doing maneuvers at an airbase on my way into work. Don't let the size of those things fool you, those things are insane, I ahve seen one come down, throw up speed brakes a few feet above the ground, land and stop all before the very first turnoff on the runway.

Many years ago (maybe 20 or so) a Airborne Express crew (I think they were flying a YS-11) landed at the wrong airport in the middle of the night. After realizing their mistake, they figured they could just take off and jump over to the correct destination and no one would notice. So they did just that.

One problem though. The wrong airport that they landed at had an operating control tower, which they were unaware of and never contacted. So they were violated for landing and taking off without a clearance.
