For a private pilot's certificate I'd average about 65 flying hours. Cheap rental rate for a Cessna 150-152 is probably about $90/hour wet(includes fuel) here in the midwest. A 172 (slightly larger) costs ~$115/hour. Instructor rates can vary between $30-60 Hour. So, $10,000 or so would get you close.
Most flights include a preflight briefing to discuss the planned activities of the flight, and a debriefing to discuss any deficiencies, review any extra material, and discuss the next planned flight. Some flights you won't have an instructor on-board for your solo flight time, other time you'll do ground lessons without a flight. So all in all, I think $10k is a nice answer for an "average" cost...Sadly, I remember when it'd cost you about $6k, and it wasn't that many years ago.

Sounds a bit more realistic but I'd think the only way you'd have a realistic chance at doing it in 40 hours with no prior experience would be if you could afford to go to a school where you fly a few hours every day until you're signed off. Flying an hour a week you'll spend part of next week's hour relearning what you learned this week.
Well my dad did it in 40 hours and he only did one lesson a week.
Sometimes I think you've just got the gift. Like I did my first proper manual driving lesson last week and I drove for 9 miles and only stalled once. I think thats pretty good going, so if I can do that then i'm sure planes are the same for some people,
I took my practical with exactly 40.0 hours logged. But being a mechanic, I did have some unlogged seat time. Plus I flew 4-5 times a week and got it done in a month. I also worked at small airport with unrestricted access to a Cherokee, that I only had to pay for fuel. My situation made the training fairly easy.
For months I was entertaining the idea of taking flying lessons and getting a pilot's license. I even joined AOPA and shortly there after I started receiving pilot/airplane gear catalogs sent to me. Unfortunately I found everything to be expensive but more importantly the flying lessons were way too pricey so that idea went out the window. Too bad I don't have a rich uncle. I admire the people that have the means to learn to fly and eventually get their license. To me it would be an amazing accomplishment to earn a pilot's license.
