is there any reason i have to take all my medication bottles with me on a flight? can i just keep the dosages i need in one bottle? in the past ive dragged all the bottles with me but they take up space in my backpack
i may also take one or 2 valium tabs with me which are controlled substances (the meds above are not). i may want it for the return flight
can i do this without taking the whole bottle(which has the proof of prescription on it) or is it going to be an issue with security?

If you're going to take the prescriptions with you in a carry-on , then the TSA may need to see the prescription containers to make sure they are prescriptions that will not cause passengers to go crazy, cause problems during the flight, and disrupt the flight, that's the only reason I can think of.
With liquid meds you need to have it in the original bottles. With pills on a domestic flight I am not sure it is something you "need" to do but maybe something you should do. I travel with vitamins and some pills to help me sleep. Everything is natural, but the melatonin pills look just like any other pill could looks. TSA is not law enforcement and bringing pills on a plane to my knowledge is not illegal so they really can't do much. But the airlines can have their own rules. Better safe than sorry but I have never had a problem taking different types of pills in a plastic bag.
Again this is for domestic flights ONLY. International you need to have the prescription bottle.
you could be right i just called Airtran and they told me they should be in the original bottles

Sometimes there maybe individuals who want to do something crazy, like hijack the aircraft, they may take some prescription drugs that can affect their judgment and make them feel invincible. That's one reason I can think of.
Tale your prescriptions to the filling pharmacy and ask them to package an air travel supply. They will place the meds in special smaller container for the trip with a label for TSA purposes. Call first as not all pharmacies can or will do this.
I have thought about putting the (completely unlabeled) melatonin tablets in with the aspirin...and then thought that might not be such a good idea on an international flight.
I wouldn't worry on domestic...but then I don't need the melatonin anyway.
