An Indiana teenager is dead and his father is missing after an attempt to set a world record ended in tragedy off the coast of American Samoa. Haris Suleman, 17, was trying to become the youngest person ever to pilot a single-engine plane around the world in under 30 days, reports the Indianapolis Star.
Years back, I remember the Guinness Book of World Records stated that they would no longer have a category for "youngest person to accomplish xxx" because it started getting ridiculous, and some of the feats proved rather dangerous. This would be one of those cases.
Very tragic news. Haris seemed to be a very fine young man. Haris and his father were trying to raise funds to build schools in Pakistan. It must have been an adventure of a lifetime for the two. My condolences to the family and their friends.
What is it about that area of the Pacific that causes small planes to go down? Amelia Erhart comes to mind. Are there challenging atmospheric conditions, or something?
I haven't seen any indication of weather issues, and they were only 23 miles from shore, so I'm inclined to suspect an equipment failure of some kind. But we'll have to wait for the investigation results.
This reminds me of the 7-year-old girl who was trying to become the youngest pilot to do something or other, back in 1990s, I think.. She crashed right after takeoff. She, her instructor, and her father were killed. Her father was sitting in back of her and they found them with his arms wrapped around his daughter from behind.

This is nothing like that. In this case the young pilot was not only fully qualified, but more experienced than many private pilots, having already flown most of the way around the world.
Like I said, we'll need to see what the investigation yields, but I suspect some kind of equipment failure, probably the engine. Could be a hundred different possible causes.

Thanks for the clarification. It's a tragedy.
