The November 20 issue featured the story behind one of the most iconic SR-71 photos...

History, Travel, Arts, Science, People, Places | Air & Space Magazine

Now the Dec/Jan issue, on the stands now, features an extended article, with lots of photos, of SR-71 pilot's memories of peak moments from their experiences... like having SAM missiles lock on, after launch!

A couple of pertinent bits... the pilot's #1 job at speed (Mach 3) was to keep the aircraft nose within 2-3 degrees of the correct angle, or the plane would go out of control, like RIGHT NOW! And in a hard enough turn, they could experience an almost total loss of thrust very suddenly, pitching both pilot and systems operator forward so their helmets hit the canopy.

Funny, their mission ended 25 years ago and they're STILL an amazing plane, like no other.

And if you want to have a look at another Kelly Johnson "miracle" here's the U-2 flight manual.
