Southwest plane wing clips American plane's tail on LaGuardia taxiway | 7online.com

So how often does this happen and how easy is it to repair the damage?

This happened to my dad once when he was with Braniff...he was moving an aircraft to another gate or there was a gate change I don't remember and he clipped just the very tip of the leading edge of the wing of the DC-9.

Lot's of paperwork but no real biggie, aircraft was back in service in practically no time. Believe it or not, it happens more than you think.
