Airasia is probably equivalent to southwest in the states, but I'm not sure if they do long haul flights.
Sorta. Maybe more like Spirit Airlines. They do "long-hauls" under the "Air Asia X" flag. Not sure what their longest distances are but I've flown them from KL to Taipei and from Manila to Seoul.

I saw the weather maps for that area and there was some seriously nasty stuff en route to their final destination, but still.... planes are designed to withstand bad weather and severe turbulence. If the plane did go down due to weather there's no way in hell it's still intact after dropping 38,000 feet, so the wreckage shouldn't be too hard to find.
I'm not jumping on the conspiracy bandwagon just yet.
An AirAsia flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore lost contact with air traffic control on Sunday, Indonesian media said, citing a Transport Ministry official.
I remember and commented on the MH-370 thread that there might have been some connection to Singapore .. and I have no idea what it is ( if any) but I just found that odd. I don't know why this is happening so frequently.. I hope this plane is found.
I just saw it on Breaking News on Yahoo. Pilot requested an unusual route. Doesn't sound good at all.
I heard that he requested an unusual route due to weather issues. But as you write, this isn't good at all. I also read that the search has just been suspended due to the nightfall in the area.
