Planes are scary because you have nothing to hang to when this heavy machine starts falling several feet from above . Some planes have parachutes. Not the big airliner size, but some smaller ones. You could find someone to do a ride (or is it fly?) share?

In the event of a failure the crew could throw all the passengers out the door thereby reducing the weight significantly.

That sounds great. I was always thinking of parachutes attached to the airplane so in case of an accident and the plane is falling, they deploy and they plane will sail smoothly down and land softly!
Im talking passenger jets, 737's, 57's 777's...lol
Back to the original question of a plane losing 99% of its weight: that wouldn't matter even if possible. If a 200,000 pound airplane was able to lose 99% of its weight, it would still weight 2,000 pounds. 2000 pounds falling out of the sky would hit the ground no softer (from a passenger's perspective) than 200,000 pounds.
