St. Maarten videos always remind me of the days when you could spot at end of a runway in Detroit (DTW). It was very similar, but just a little farther from the end of the runway. It was a rush when the 747s came in, or took off. I'd love to go to St. Maarten to experience it there too.
If you are one of those fools that that gets a rush out of doing stupid things, St Maarten is a must for your bucket list. The first time I saw a picture of a 747 landing there I was sure it had been doctored at the photo lab to make it look like it was really that close to the people on the beach.
Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (formerly Friendship Airport) has an aircraft viewing area near the end of one of the runways where the passing aircraft aren't much higher than at St. Maarten.
That's crazy close to the beach. As the airliners fly over the beach can people get sand blasted? I would think it would hurt.
Not for landings but for takeoffs, yes, especially for larger aircraft (it was fun watching people get sandblasted when an Air France 747 took off). There are warning signs on the fence, yet people were standing right behind it and some got knocked down.
