If you want to save a lot of money and have more versatility at hand, Get a fixed wing license first, including commercial, then get the helicopter rating. You'd come out much cheaper in the long run and be a commercial pilot in both. It took me about 30 hours in the helicopter after I had the fixed wing rating to get the helicopter rating. It'll take you over 200 hours t get the helicopter commercial rating by itself. Do the math, my friend! About $100 an hour, or less, in the airplane for a couple of 100 hours vs well over $200 in a helicopter. I did it that way when I got my licenses, far cheaper with the airplane ticket first.

I guess it all depends on who you ask.
I've been to some helicopter-specific forums about this issue recently.
The pilots there typically cast doubts on doing it that way if one ever intends to fly specifically helicopters in a commercial capacity.

Now I guess if it was a strict, private/personal transport option, then that would be the way to go.
