Another issue is that the air traffic controllers in the USA have mandatory retirement at age 55/56. So that means they need to be replaced even more quickly than pilots.

Almost all American industries are suffering from the loss of skilled people. They did not hire new people for the last 20 years or so for more then menial jobs. Now they ***** because they cannot find anyone to build the machines that make the machines that make the parts.

Exactly, but not only in the U.S.

"The issue with a system that old is that people don't like to do maintenance work," explained Fiacre. "Furthermore, we are starting to lose the expertise [to deal] with that type of operating system. In Paris, we have only three specialists who can deal with DECOR-related issues," said Fiacre.

I'm sorry to hear you failed the BIO. Thank God Congressman (R) Hulgren from Illinois spoke up about this (after all, in his state, Perdue University had an awesome ATC program which basically is dead now) -- and he got Congress to pass the "Safe Skies Act" - to finally eliminate the Bio exam...good luck to you and my son when the next call up happens - hopefully in October...fingers crossed.....Kids like you and my son have lived and breathed aviation since childhood (plus son is a private pilot) and its wrong that kids with passion in this field are being denied because of 'diversity'......and kids coming out of the academy with 'fail/or pass' ATSATS (son had a 97+%) are not qualified or ready to do the jobs........this is insane!!

Thanks for the words. I hope your son makes it this time around. I know there are a lot of passionate and qualified people waiting on the outside. I took a good position with an airline, so I have dropped out of the ATC hiring pool. That's one less person your son has to compete with.

You say this about diversity.

So what questions on the test would point to one ethnic group versus another?

I think it is just as likely the FAA is trying eliminate those who would question their work rules and the like.

The biggest thorn in the FAA's side has always been PATCO and later NATCA.

Design a test to sort out the malcontents early and FAA Management's life will be grand.

As far as FAA Management is concerned, it's never been about who can do the job, it's about, who gets along with me.

It was not the BIO persay, the the fact that 3000 applicants who took the BIO had their applications 'misplaced' by HR in the FAA......the first questions on the test were: what is your age? what is your gender? what is your race? Look up Fox News Investigative Story, "Trouble in the Skies" and it will show you what this is all about:

It isn't a partisan report. I don't like Fox, but the articles they put out there on the ATC issue are accurate.
