Guns were first placed on aircraft to avoid having to ram them. This was a great improvement in pilot longevity.
The kamikaze attacks on our ships in WW2 was our first major experience with terminally guided cruise missiles. They were very difficult to stop. If the Luftwaffe had though of placing radar coupled terminal guidance on the V-1 Cruise missile it could have made D-day much more costly.
It's well to dwell on WWII – but what about the future? I fancy that the means may be found for enveloping an enemy-plane in an impenetrable bag. Now, who needs force-fields!
