One thread asked
DC-3 of the jet era?

but what might be consider the prop equivalent of the DC-3 in the modern era?

One might say the C-130 but let's put that aside for at least two reasons: 4 engines and one really needs BIG BUCKS (ie, the government) usually to have it. Let's think more in terms what someone could go to the bank to talk about.

Off hand, I would say the de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter. Granted, it doesn't have it in range nor in speed or in cargo carrying weight ........

...............but it is a very versatile aircraft for a civilian operator for multiple type of fields, either on land or water.

Other suggestions?

Twin Otter is too small. If you rule out the C-130 (Which I believe is the true prop replacement for the DC-3) I would suggest the DeHaviland/Bonbardier Dash-8 as the replacement.

When you consider how much say a 737 cost an airline to buy and operate when airlines were buying the DC-3 70 years ago the C-130 suddenly looks competitive cost wise. Not something only governments can buy

I'm still crying. Did anyone see a few years ago when the Wrigley (Gum) Family sold their DC-3 for something like only $200,000 with like 4,000 total hours?

Here's a link to the plane that a previous owner posted about the plane. Awesome!

Hands down that honor would have to go to the C-130 in my opinion. A do anything fly anywhere and more importantly land in a cow pasture (well not really) aircraft and the oldest aircraft in continuous production. A history that far surpasses that of the DC-3.
