They lied.
That's what they call "foot in mouth" syndrome.

This is one of the most corrupt police departments in the United States - of course they will lie on a police report to protect their own. No surprise and nobody should question the rational behind this if they have half a brain.

Yep. Daley I apparently set this up as a country club position for the chief of his bodyguard detail. Originally it was just a gate guard department, but somewhere it got upped to "police" (Daley II, anyone?).

And of course, it was one of those departments that required some sort of political power to get in, which makes sense because from what I can tell, they don't have the authority to actually do anything except collect up to almost $90k a year for wandering around the airport and possibly writing tickets.

What is funny, is that apparently the Chicago Aviation Department just re-branded the Aviation Police Department the "Aviation Security Department" as a very obvious public slap across the face. There are union contracts involved, so who knows whether it's going to stick. But it's obviously the Aviation Department saying FU to the Aviation "police" for screwing up so badly. And the aviation police DID bungle it.

Thanks for posting that. That was my understanding as well but I got spanked by a poster here who claimed they are the equivalent of regular sworn CPD officers. It's been my experience in other airports that airport police are typically the equivalent of rent-a-cops. I think since 9/11 a few of them like SFPD have started staffing the airport with fully sworn officers though.

Sorry but still "Police" in every legal sense. Meet the Illinois definition of a Police Officer and were in generally retired cops and such.

Great post.

This is an all around mess but it's the corruption of the Chicago PD, the bad ex-Continental computer system screwing up (again,) and United's aloof - and quite frankly stupid PR response that will ruin their image for a long while.

I posted a statement made by the Department of Aviation in Chicago STATING they were part of the CPD. You didn't like that though because it didn't fit your narrative and you cannot be wrong about anything.

That SAME department is now saying otherwise. All they're doing is allowing the CPD to distance themselves from the officers working at O'Hare involved in the Dao incident.

Chicago politics 101.

I am wrong about all sorts of things, and I gave up on the argument because there were in fact conflicting statements online about their actual status, I think your last sentence in this post sums it up pretty well:
Chicago politics 101. It's not uncommon for law enforcement to utilize 'reserve' or 'auxillary' police and try to convince the public that they are just as well trained and experienced as a regular cop, but when there's a problem they always start walking that back
