Okay, I really hate to fly partly because of my fear of flight, partly because of the discomforts and lack of service for cattle class. But I have to fly again soon...
I'm a big guy(6 feet, 230lbs) and I'll have to go through the ordeal of a very long flight(almost 14 hours). The best thing I can afford is upgrading to Main Cabin Extra. The best seats seem to be exit row and bulkhead. The emergency exit seats offer unlimited legroom, but the proximity to the lavatory may be bothersome. What about the bulkhead seats? I know its pros and cons, but I don't know much about the bulkhead seats on AA 787. Do they offer more legroom than other MCE seats? Are they slightly more comfortable than exit row seats?
Bulkhead seats don't necessarily have any extra legroom. You may not have the seat/table ahead right in your stomach, but you won't be able to stretch your legs out straight as there is no seat in front of you to put your feet under. Been there on a 13+ hour flight to Madagascar. Really bad!
I have one bucket list destination that will require about 18 hours of international flying just to get to. The misery of the flights is the only reason I may not go at all.
I will go for Emergency Exit Seats if possible.
I will not pay extra money for Main Cabin Extra - 5 inches is not any massive advantage. Reclining seat in Business Class is worth paying for but I will not pay for MCE.
I have been on long flights 16 hours or so and I try to avoid any American Carriers as other Airlines give better seat pitch on Economy Class.
A combination of walking/standing regularly in the airplane, Beer, sleeping and luck in getting a seat where nobody else is sitting next to you will help.
I like the exit seat at the window with no seat in front of you. Lots of leg room and you do not have to cram past two people you can just walk around.

Thanks.
I am just not sure whether the 5 inches can make a huge difference. I'll feel unhappy if I still can't stretch my legs by paying extra money for MCE.
Exit seats sound better. Unlimited legroom, no reclining seats in front of you. I don't really mind the proximity to the lavatory.
Better seat pitch isn't the only reason I hate American carriers. Okay, I think everyone knows that service doesn't exist there, no need to elaborate.
For my itinerary, only AA offers nonstop service. Being a really nervous flyer, I can't handle extra time-off/landing that comes with more stops than absolutely necessary.

The exit seat at the window can be quite bothersome on some aircrafts, because the emergency door protrudes into your space.
I hate bulkhead seats! I'm 6' 2" and there is no stretching out for me. Even in First Class.
