I stopped flying very often due to a job change, so I lost track of the road warrior details. So my last trip on business had me departing Vegas. The line for TSA was hours long. For some random reason, both me and a fellow coworkers both got a pre-check designation on our boarding passes. So our wait became 22 seconds instead of 2 hours.
That was almost as satisfying as a surprise seat upgrade to the front.
Well I just submitted an app for Global. Won't have it for this trip to Orlando but hopefully will be able to get an appt for the interview there in Orlando after I arrive, which is much more convenient than where I live (would have to drive an hour an a half special). Then I'll have it for the next trip.
The website is quirky and I have to keep checking back for application approval to set up an appointment. The log in is quirky too.
Bleh.
What this about credit cards paying the fee?
On our last return trip from Las Vegas it was a bit of a different experience. For some reason they were herding all TSA pre checks into one line and making them remove laptops, etc. from carry on luggage. I did so but, I got stopped because I'd thrown an open bag of snack mix into my carry on. That said, I do think there was heightened security that day in Vegas. It was a couple months after the shooting. I suspect something else was going on also.
It definitely wasn't related to the shooting. I was in Vegas one week after the shooting and LAS pre-check (for Delta) was the same as it is everywhere. It was also way faster than the regular line. I've never been stopped anywhere domestically for carrying food (non-liquid) through even if the bag is open.
For people that signed up for TSA Pre-check, do you think it's worth it? If so, do you fly often and do you think it would still be worth it if you didn't fly often? Any negatives?
I don't fly very often, but I have a trip in a month that involves Orlando airport, and not sure I want to go through that craziness again if I can avoid it!
I’m not sure it is worth it if you don’t travel often. We go on domestic and internation trips a lot so we have CLEAR and Global Entry/PreCheck. Certain air miles programs like Delta Diamond get free membership to CLEAR. If it is purely long lines you hate, CLEAR is the better option because a lot of people have precheck nowadays...not every airport has CLEAR though. If taking off your shoes etc also bug you, get CLEAR AND precheck. But, if you don’t fly often, I really don’t think it is worth the trouble to enroll in any of these.
i like TSA pre check and yes it is worth it. i don't pay more i just have a frequent flyer miles card. I didn't enroll in anything or request, it just shows printed on my boarding pass and they point me to the (really really really short) line and i go right through.
I was lucky. Since I fly to Denver from Houston several times /yr to see family, I was automatically registered! Maybe being a Senior helps...not sure, but no more shoes off!

CLEAR plus Global Entry/PreCheck is awesome! CLEAR will get you escorted right to the front of the TSA line.
To me, both Orlando and Vegas are two nightmare-ishly long lines. If I could swing the cost (or find a rewards program to pay for it) I would definitely do it, even if flying only a few times a year. But maybe I am so burned out from 2-3x trips per month, that any sort of extra hassle would be more than I could take.
And now I am nervous about these full body scan. I have knee replacements so I have to do the full scan even with TSA. I guess I need to do a little research on the amount of radiation I am getting with all those scans. Should I be concerned? Maybe better to not research as travel is mandatory for my type of job, which I need for financial reasons, so not sure what I can do.

Being a senior has nothing to do with it. The Pre-Check via airlines is a function of the airline your flying, the lead time from purchase to travel, frequent flyer status, payment method, airport location, travel history, and some other stuff as well. Signing up for TSA Pre Check just ensures you will always have the Pre Check.
