So I had the opportunity to work for a private operator for a few years. Enjoyed the job for the most part. As a plane geek, it was a lot of fun to be around the birds.

As time went on and the original management staff (which I liked) left mainly due to the fact that the owner was a narcissistic, arrogant nut-job who was abusive to his employees, I started to notice a trend amongst the operators that I interviewed with of the same sort of behavior by both ownership and management.

When discussing this with my old boss who has since gone on to bigger and better things within the aviation world, she said that sadly many operators she has dealt with in her new role exhibit the same kind of behavior.

What gives? Is it just the nature of the business? It certainly has the appearance from the outside of being very glamorous with all of the multi-million dollar aircraft and high profile clientele. While some operators have achieved great things, many still struggle with gaining and keeping clients and customers, especially with the heavy competition from the brokerage world. It's as if they (the operator) are their own worse enemy.
