Dallas' airport is the country's 4th busiest and Denver's is the 5th busiest. I use to be confused about why Atlanta and Chicago had such busy airports (busier than any of New York City's airports), but I understand it has something to do with layovers and being airline hubs. Is this the case with Dallas and Denver? What also surprised me is Seattle's airport is one rank ahead of Las Vegas.

Everybody wants to leave, maybe? Brings to mind the old joke, "My favorite bar in Dallas is in the departure lounge at the airport".

You pretty much answered your own question, it's a mix of airline hub and geographically location. DFW is a major American Airlines hub and DEN is a major United Airlines hub, no need to overthink it!

1. ATL- Delta Mega Hub
2. ORD- United Hub
3, LAX- Major International Hub
4. DFW- AA Hub
5. DEN- UA Hub
6. JFK- Major International Hub

So it makes sense to how busy they are. NYC might have the busiest airspace with 3 airports and Chicago with 2 and Dallas as well.

DEN was bound by geography to be a major airport.

Denver is the only major (ie, 1,000,000+) metropolitan area for a long way in every direction (Salt Lake City to the west, El Paso to the south, Kansas City to the east, Calgary to the north).

DFW has almost the same number of AA flights as Delta does in ATL. Within roughly 10% IIRC.

I believe Denver is also a hub for Southwest and Frontier as well as United.

DFW and DEN are often weather delayed. Good for airport bars / food / hotel businesses. Been to each this week. Good idea to bring 'airport hammock', plenty of drugs, snacks, chargers, clean underwear. When transitting DFW in Summer, always accept alternative routes, same with winter in DEN. (And SFO during fog)

There are normally only two months DFW sees regular weather delays - April and May. Outside that it's fairly rare. It hasn't even rained in Dallas for a month. Last year they went three months over the summer without getting a drop of rain IIRC.
