Hi there, I was up in Baltimore last week for a baseball game. I love going to the ballpark because I think it's one of the best parks in MLB.

Anyhow, we had about 4 hours to kill before we had to get to the airport so I figured that my son and I would check out Lexington Market. We were heading down Fayette street and turned the corner to head to the market. After a few feet this guy comes running down the street (not in a "running away from something" kind of way, but he seemed like a jogger) and said "I wouldn't walk down there if I were you two".

That was enough for me, I turned around and headed back. But I was wondering, is it a shady area? This was at about 11:00 am on a Tuesday.

We'll definately be back to Baltimore for more ball games, but I'd like to also see other parts of the city, and I don't know if I should remove Lexington Market from my list.

This is true. There are a lot a druggies and drugs that hang around there, from late breakfast time through lunch. Just watch yourself (no revealing of valuables) and ignore them, and you'll be fine. They generally don't bother anyone; they just like to do things like butt in line and sometimes yell at the people running the businesses. That gets on my nerves, but visiting there shouldn't be a problem for you.

Yea, there's a very diverse array of walks of life in and around Lexington market. There isn't a problem walking up there from the stadium really. Some amazing food in there.

Lexington Market definitely fits the maxim, "the bark is worse than the bite".
Although some characters around it may be sketchy, I have never had a problem visiting or shopping the market which I do quite often (frog legs today!).

Hmmm one day I will try to refrain from automatically going to the oyster/clam bar and try one of their crab cakes.

It's sketchy and shady but not "unsafe" per se. There is a decent amount of drug traffic there, but there are a lot of people and if you are minding your own business you aren't going to get shot, stabbed, raped, etc. You will likely be asked for money by someone, often more than one person. I don't have a problem walking there for lunch myself, but not sure I'd want to bring little kids there as a tourist attraction.

There's a little papusaria that makes great food for really cheap. Rosa's, in the "food court" area of the market.

Are there any bars that serve raw oysters/clams? Not that I dont mind going to Lexington Market or Cross Street Market, but is there anything closer?
