Ok I've been here in a month....there are many postives and negatives. The nightlife is fun, the pace of life and people are slower and nicer than Montgomery COunty, but crime is still a serious concern and I don't go outside at night unless in groups with friends. The nicest people in this area in my experiences are in Catonsville, Edgewood, Essex, and Dundalk.
Yuppieness and snottiness seems to take over in Ellicott City and Columbia though..but every region has greedy arrogant rich people
But for a positive Baltimore post....a list of cities I'd choose B'more to live over:
- Philadelphia
- Newark and every place in New Jersey
- New York
- Rochester
- Syracuse
- Albany
- Boston
- Portland, Maine
- Des Moines, Iowa
- Chicago

For the last 2 years, I have been sooo obsessed with Charm City. I read an article in the Washington Post about 2 summers ago and I was hooked. I just wanted affordable housing. I wanted a whole house for the price I would pay for a half-of-house here. I went on housing tours there and everything. I knew nothing about the city and can count the times I have been there in my life.
I am still researching and visiting. It's great to see a post like yours!!

sorry but I'd live in NYC over Baltimore any day of the week. And Ft. Lauderdale. Actually, pretty much any city south of VA.

Don't forget to take into account your budget when choosing NYC over Baltimore. There are trade-offs in life.

If I were a millionaire I'd move to a first tier city like NYC, San Fran, Toronto, etc. As far as second tier cities, there would be few I'd choose over Baltimore - maybe Portland, Asheville, or Austin.

I find Baltimore be very comfortable, with its pluses and minuses. A huge plus is its proximity to both NYC and Washington. Too many other cities are too isolated.

I lived in bmore for a little over 5 years and went to Johns Hopkins. The city will always have a special place in my heart. However, I would not choose baltimore over the following:
NYC
Chicago
Miami
DC
LA
San fran
I would be out of mind if i chose those cities over bmore. As much as I love bmore, it just doesnt cut it up to a certain point
