Hi everybody:

I live near White Marsh and am considering attending Baltimore City Community College, Liberty campus, this fall. I have been to the campus several times for admission, testing, etc and I know I am in the minority. That doesn't bother me at all. However, I am concerned about the area the college is in after reading this morning that two men were stabbed in that area. I know the campus itself is safe but what about the area around it? All my classes would be during daytime but I would have to park in the overflow parking lot at Bon Secours. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have not heard of any issues as it relates to students going to/from the campus. The overflow lot across the street (church parking lot) is closer but it cost $5 per day if Im not mistaken... Bons Secours is further down the street but you dont pass through any bad neighbhorhoods walking to and from the campus. Additionally, Liberty Road is well traveled so you shouldnt have any problems.

Thanks for your input. I liked everybody I talked to at BCCC but got a little nervous reading news about the area. Thanks again.

Typically, people's geographic references in Baltimore tend to be Broad.. i.e 'stay out of west baltimore' But what is West Baltimore? Poppleton, Harlem Park, Sandtown or is it Ten Hills, Hunting Ridge, Washington Village? All of these are different neighborhoods but they could all be technically "west baltimore". So someone may say, 'the area around BCCC' is horrible.. but are they talking about Park Heights? Penn North? Mondawmin? If they say Mondawmin is it the mall or the neighborhood? So I believe that is often what happens. Of course you have crime and some places more than others.. but if you analyze the crime (say using your example of a stabbing) Was it someone walking to class or two people in a domestic dispute over (whatever) in an alley and someone got shanked? Granted a crime is a crime.. but it is often helpful to put it in the proper context in order to avoid generalizing too much.

I remember a body showed up in Oakenshawe neighborhood in North Baltimore. This is a comfortable little neighborhood nestle between Johns Hopkins Homewood Campus and Guilford. As it turned out the person was killed elsewehere and dumped there though the neighborhood got the credit for the crime

You make a very good point! I did read an update to the stabbing story. It was on Liberty Heights and Gwynn Oak inside a BP gas station between some men who apparently knew each other and got into an argument. I don't know my way around Baltimore but know the college is on Liberty Heights and just started assuming things. I really appreciate your input.
