My GF has been accepted into JHU for a Masters program. She will be moving to the area at the end of summer, and I will follow a few months later. Neither of us no anything about Baltimore outside of comments ranging from "It's really cool, fun, awesome food" to "Why the heck would you want to live there?"

I know this is a tall order, but any information would be appreciated as we currently know diddly squat. Places to live, rent, safety, food, etc.

We are both in are mid-30s, if that helps.

We also have a vehicle and an 80 lb dog. The dog could possibly stay with her parents or brother if needed, and even though there is a vehicle, being near public transportation would be nice.

Thanks in advance.

Rent a place in the Patterson Park neighborhood. It's near the JH Med Complex and a great area for dogs.

It would be important to know if your girlfriend will be at JHU Homewood or the medical campus. If near Homewood, the area of Wyman Park is advised. Wyman Park Dell itself is ostensibly a dog park.

Thanks for the suggestions. All I know is she will be at the School of Public Health.

Have you lived in a major city before? When I transplanted to Baltimore, I came from a smaller, more rural area. It was definitely a different experience.

If you are going to live in the city, I'd advise you to make a brief visit. In my experience, Baltimore neighborhoods are very "spotty". For example, driving down baltimore st. by patterson park is really nice, but literally, a block or two a way the area seems really unsafe.

A lot depends on your personal preference and comfort level.
