Looking for homes to buy and there are some really great rehabs in this area but I've heard iffy things and the post about Washington V/Pigtown is quite old so I'm looking for updated advice. Is it improving? Will I get mugged at night if I have to walk a distance to my townhome if I can't find parking? How IS parking? Should I stick to whitey neighborhoods? Sorry for that but let's face it. ...I'm alone and don't want to have to live in fear of someone sticking a gun to me to rob me of the 20 bucks I usually carry with me...seriously...broke.

I live on Cross St and Dexter and there are at least 2 or 3 white women that live over here on this street and they seem to be comfortable. I see them walking their dogs and even saw one jogging the other day. Pigtown has alot of white folks so I dont think that should be a worry.

Don't move there.

Not long ago, a man was shot in Waverly for 13 dollars.

The thugs will take your 20 bucks after they rape and/or kill you. Being a woman, you have something else that they will help themselves to besides the cash in your wallet.

Just because Pigtown has white people doesn't mean you can let your guard down. The whites that live there (excluding the urban pioneer gentrification types) are just as scary as the blacks that live there.

If you're looking for a safer cheap hood, check into Hampden.

The information on Pigtown here in the forum still applies. There hasn't been a drastic change for the better or worse in the past 5 years far as I'm aware. Its still rough and fairly sketchy but not overtly unsafe. A sane person could consider living there but would need a high tolerance for the problems it has. My tolerance isn't that high.

I don't know how long you plan on staying there, but buying in that area is not what I would call a good investment. If you are young and single you would likely want to move within the next decade for your career or your potential family. I doubt the area will improve much in that time frame, so you might have trouble selling when you want to leave.

I lived in Pigtown for three years and still have a rental property there. There are numerous rehabs in the area that 5 blocks East would be 100-150k more in price. Things were steadily turning before the recession but the area seemed to stagnate once everything crashed. Camden Crossing townhouses are selling for 150k+ less than they were a couple years ago.

If you have your wits about you then it can be a great place to live. It's far less expensive, everything is a cab ride away and the neighbors I had on Washington and Wyeth are great. I think I had an issue parking once in my three years there although I would strongly suggest getting a parking permit during football season.

Unfortunately I purchased in '07 when things were still quite expensive in the city and thus I'll probably be renting my place out for awhile.
