Starting work in Middle river soon : Need apartment advice (Baltimore: apartment complexes, coop)

Hello,

I would be starting work in Middle river, Baltimore in a month and i have no idea about Baltimore.

I have heard its not a safe place to live. Can anyone please recommend some good apartments in areas nearby ? I am willing to commute 10-15 miles one way to work as long as the place is safe and good.

Please suggest something keeping in mind that i am a girl.

Sudhi -- I don't know who is feeding you that crap. Middle River is perfectly safe to live in. Whether you would want to live there is another matter, but thousands do, seemingly happily.
Middle River started pretty much as a factory town for the Glenn L. Martin, an aviation pioneer. During World War II, it employed something like 50,000 people, who filled every chicken coop and boat house at the peak of housing shortage. Many of those workers were hillbillies, a fact that has colored the outside world's judgments about Middle River ever since.
In recent years, the worst of those WWII-vintage apartment complexes have come down, replaced by modern housing. If you need names of apartment complexes, google Middle River Chamber of Commerce and ask for recommendations.
Further away is Nottingham and the wider White Marsh area in the I-95 corridor. Plenty of apartments. No complaints of safety there, either.

Middle River is primarily blue collar, older housing, but there are also some new townhouses and homes there too. It is pretty safe, but there is a airport, so you might want to be aware of where you live if you don't like planes overhead.

I think there's also an aviation museum at the airport Koofie mentioned. My grandfather apparently worked for the Glenn L Martin company back in the day. It's not the worst place in the world, certainly.

I followed a politician, state Sen. Andy Harris, on his campaign in Middle River for one day last year. The whole area is changing in a gentrification of sorts. If you go to the Back River peninsula, it's still like the 1920s. Narrow roads, etc. But the attraction of water has led to the building of mcmansions on the shoreline.
I personally am coming to the conclusion that commuting is getting worse every day. If you can live close to work, I'd seriously consider it.
Carott -- The aviation museum is basically a one-room job. The museum has a number of old planes, but because of the national security concerns of the airport -- which is the National Guard base, among other things -- you cannot wander around freely but have to be escorted.

Thanks for the info on the museum -- I haven't yet been there, but it's on my list of places to visit...now I know not to rush. :-)
