OMG how funny is that?? I just posted about Oakenshawe in another thread.

Jeez are we all starting to think alike? That could be dangerous...

If she wants a larger lot for gardening, definitely Arcadia, Beverly Hills, or Lauraville. Those areas have a lot of younger people in them with lots of trees and I think she could find something nice for 1500.

The zip code is 21218. I'm not sure how many bedrooms you need, but here are some options in that area, just to give you an idea.

Super Second Floor Balcony Apartment (broken link)
Renovated Townhouse Available Immediately (broken link)
Beautiful Canterbury/Tuscany Condo for Rent (broken link)

Also check the JHU Gazette for rentals in Oakenshawe, Guilford, Roland Park, Tuscany/Canterbury.

Default Consider Lauraville

I would love to throw in a suggestion from the NE side of town for the Lauraville neighborhood. I have lived in Baltimore most of my life in the areas of Glen, Mt. Washington, Cheswolde. However, within the last five years, I have lived in Northern Baltimore City in Waverly, which I love. However, I always noted that Waverly is in transition from a blue collar and renter community to a gentrified community. Having a little one, I have a large number of friends, who live in Lauraville, which has large older homes with tree lined streets. It also has a large number of families with young children and many local businesses in the area that cater to those families. For example, there is a wonderful store called the Red Canoe, which is a bookstore, gathering spot, and cafe. It offers toddler, children and family yoga. There are areas where stay at home parents can meet. There is even a sing along for parents and children weekly. The houses are very reasonable with prices in the $200,000. The neighbors are eclectic and lean to the liberal side of things. I wish you every happiness in your move.

I have friends in the Arcadia/Lauraville area and all agree that it is going down hill. Of course, whether that's actually true or if they're just saying that since those areas are seeing an influx of blacks is something else entirely.

Lauraville is definitely not "going downhill" -- it's a great neighborhood, and it gets better all the time. There's a very active (and cohesive) community association, which has been a catalyst for most of the improvements. Lauraville should serve as a model for other communities, including my own, that are trying to improve.

Agreed Lauraville is definitely not going downhill at all. I live in Hamilton but it's right next to Lauraville and I love both neighborhoods.
