Sandtown is actually on an upswing. I know a good family who rehabbed a home and bought in there. It is not as horrible as people say. But, be careful on the street. You certainly did not move to a "safe" area of town.

You guys laugh but the people in Sandtown are working really hard to turn things around there. This community organization is leading the way:

Welcome to Sandtown

Maybe it's the "next hot neighborhood?" LOL.

Sandtown is the area just north of 40 and just west of MLK Blvd by University of MD Medical School.

Default A state of mind

Well, Sandtown seems to be a state of mind. If it now includes the area across MLK from the University of Maryland Medical School, then it has expanded to a neighborhood known as Poppleton.
The Sandtown I know is bounded by Fulton, North, Pennsylvania and Franklin/Mulberry.
Whatever the borders, the name is one of those names that bureaucrats made up in the 1960s and 1970s. Before that, the place was a no-name neighborhood known simply as West Baltimore.

Sandtown does not rub against the university of Maryland. Official borders:
Baltimore City Neighborhoods - Western District
