I used to work right at MLK and Baltimore St and I watched them build those townhomes at Camden Crossing. They look awesome on the website but that is not an area you'd want to live in. One drive down Scott St will answer your questions.

Ridgley's is much better. As your friend said, west of MLK is pretty rough, but just east of it feels much safer. I did a lot of work at University of Maryland and they do an amazing job with security, making areas close to the school feel pretty safe. Ridgley's seems like a pleasant little neighborhood.

Ridgley's is a nice neighborhood but not at all immune to crime, some of it serious. If you plan to move to Baltimore, you will deal with crime at some point. There is not a neighborhood in the city that doesn't have a crime problem, Federal Hill, Canton and Fells Point included. I did a crime survey a few weeks ago at a party of about 50 people. Everyone in the group had been victim to some kind of crime within the last year...everyone. It is just a way of life here, unfortuantely.

My wife and I have been looking at areas around lake Montebello (Lauraville, Aradia, etc), and Original Northwood. Any thoughts on those areas? How are the schools? Are there any good catholic schools there?

This post is kind of all over. To answer most recent post,
Lauraville is nice and original Northwood is very nice. My friend's parents live there, and I think it's nicer than Lauraville.
As for schools, there are a good number of catholic schools and there are lots of private schools too. Most private schools are very good, but are very expensive. Catholic High Schools: Calvert Hall, Loyola, Catholic High, Towson Catholic Private High Schools: Roland Park, Bryn Mawr, Park, Friends, Garrison Forest, Gilman, Boys Latin, St. Pauls
There are many more that I can't remember. Best of luck with your move.

I live right by Camden Crossing, and I own a business at Washington Boulevard & Scott. Honestly if that's what you consider an unsafe area, city living probably isn't for you. Ridgely's has their fair share of crime, too. My suggestion would be to contact the various neighborhood associations and see what they have to say. Getting advice from people who actually live in these neighborhoods would be much more useful to you, I would think.

We had a shooting in Washington Village / Pigtown just last week right next to the Camden Crossing development, along with 2 in Canton and one in Patterson Park (and probably 20 others in less fortunate areas.) I love Baltimore, but it's best to know what you're getting into. City life isn't for everyone, especially the faint of heart.....just my uncensored, honest opinion.
