Always. Allegany County is home and means a lot to me. If someone's talking crap on Cumberland, I'll take up for it any time or day. I'm not gonna just stand by while my neighbor gets slapped in the face.

Back when the George's Creek Library opened, the Baltimore Sun came up and did a story. They interviewed a local lady that's been prominent in the community for years. They asked her why she felt this community needed a library. She gave the answers anyone would to which they responded, "Yes, but we understand that most people in this part of the state can't read." Boy, did she give them an earful. Pure ignorance.

Most people downstate know better than to think like that but, for those who don't, I feel obligated to give them a proper education on the matter.

Haha! I've heard that one before. You know, sometimes I do wonder what those little old ladies that went to my church think of me when I come in to vote and they see my registration lol. I know that I'm not the only one but definitely one of the few.

I am surprised the Sun even sought out a respectable member of the community rather than looking for the most downtrodden person they could find to interview and take pictures of. It fits their agenda better. They always run a "Ignorant Hillbillies cling to existance on fringe of state" story every few years or so whether they need to or not.

As for registration in the Crick:

Barton.............. Dem 202 GOP 493
Coney.............. Dem 255 GOP 886
Midland ............ Dem 351 GOP 831

You are in rare company indeed. Cumberland is still majority Democrat, although most are certainly of the Blue Dog persuasion.

I know nothing about the UK, but based on some of this and the comment that you want diversity, maybe Highlandtown near Patterson Park? It's probably one of the more diverse neighborhoods in Baltimore (not that that's saying much), with Italian and Hispanic food in Highlandtown itself and Greek food right next door in Greektown. And you'd be basically right between Hopkins and Hopkins Bayview (if those are the types of "services" you're referring to).

Interesting. THe U.S. is REALLY different in different places. I guess it would be like assuming that the U.K. and Italy are exactly the same.

Baltimore city is nothing like rural southern parts of the country.

It amazes me how few people have actually traveled to other countries and spoke with people about our policies and ambitions. To many, it is actually quite scary. I understand the OP with her concerns as I often have similar thoughts. To the OP,you will be fine in Baltimore. In fact, you will probably adapt quicker and with more finese than many Americans. In terms of where to locate, perhaps rent at first and feel your way to an area that you feel comfortable. Perhaps an old-fashioned concept but it still works.

I would suggest North Charles Street area. It's a University area, and pretty good (for an urban environment).

I went to Greece. When the cab driver found out my wife and I were American, he stopped speaking Greek, broke into his best English and said "Deorge Boos dink blaud fer beakfast." We were tempted to tell the locals we were Canandian after that, but didn't. Oh well.

All of the socialism in Europe scares me as it sets bad (IMO) precedents in this country, but the people that believe in it don't scare me. People are people. If you can defend what you believe in an articulate and rational way, you should never feel out of place, or afraid to speak up.

I guess the moral of the story is, if you want good honest answers about housing, don't bring up politics!! Very sore subject in this country, especially right now, it will cause a thread to go way off course.

Same goes for living in Baltimore, don't bring up politics unless you are with your closest of friends. This isn't some all liberal place people think it is, and even liberals have a wide variety of views.
