Forbes: Baltimore No. 2 for high-tech jobs
Baltimore Business Journal by Ryan Sharrow, Web Editor
Date: Monday, November 21, 2011, 2:31pm EST - Last Modified: Monday, November 21, 2011, 4:26pm EST

Baltimore ranks No. 2 in the country for high-tech jobs.

Forbes magazine said Baltimore’s number of tech jobs grew by 18.6 percent from 2001-2011. An advantage for Baltimore, Forbes said, is the city’s proximity to the federal government.

“This explains why Baltimore, primarily its suburbs, and the D.C. metro area have enjoyed steady tech growth and, under most foreseeable scenarios, likely will continue to do so in the coming years,” Forbes wrote. “Both regions have seen large gains in technology services industries, particularly programming, systems design, research, and engineering.”

Washington, D.C., ranked No. 7.

The list was compiled by looking at the latest high-tech employment data from the 51 largest U.S. metropolitan areas collected by EMSI, an economic modeling firm.

Seattle was first on the list, followed by Baltimore, Columbus, Ohio; Raleigh, N.C.; and Salt Lake City.
