I live in Mt Vernon and work on the inner harbor. For a little while I have been riding the circulator to get to work, but I find that I can actually walk the trip faster than I can ride the bus when there's traffic. My question involves safety, especially walking through the downtown area.

Is there an hour in the evening after which I would probably want to get a cab or ride the bus for safety? Also, in the event that I decide to do the walk, are there any rules in the city governing the ownership/use of pepper spray that I should know about?

The rule of thumb is your comfort level. Give it a try and see how you feel.

If you are walking up Charles, there is no problem. You have the dinner crowd and then the bar folks. I would say after 10 or so, I would catch a cab if it is a long distance. I walk/bus/metro daily to work, many times coming home later than I want and have never had an issue.

Yeah, usually I've mostly taken Charles street on this walk, but I also tried Calvert & St. Paul. Are those riskier?

I haven't had any incidents yet or felt particularly uncomfortable (did watch a fight break out the other night but just walked around it), but I'm new to the city and have heard enough stories about problems downtown that I want to do what's reasonable to avoid or prevent getting robbed or attacked.

I don't think so.

You're your own barometer for this sort of thing. If you feel it's too late, just take a cab. We are blessed with cheap cabs in this town, if nothing else!
