Ill be coming to Hopkins for a fellowship next year right around May or June. Ive been looking at these forums the past few weeks and like most the general impresssion that I get is that there are really some areas Imhav to avoid. Im a 31year old asian whos lookin to stay at a walking distance away from hopkins main hospital. Im planning to rent a room for a year and wont be getting a car. Im hoping to get some nice inputs. Thanks.
By the way I hope the area u could suggest will be safe to walk to and from even during early mornings and at night (if there is such a place)

Hi there..welcome!

there is subway line to Hopkins..you can stay around the Harbor area (fed hill) or little Italy or Harbor east..take the rail there or ride a bike.

Most of all, common sense. Aware of your environment...muggers looks for opportunity ..so any big cities will have the same issue.

I would suggest looking at homes / places that are located on or near the Hopkins Shuttle route. That way, if you end up staying late, or, wanting to head in early, you won't have to worry about weather or safety. The shuttle runs all around the city...

Sure, there are homes within immediate walking distance of the East Baltimore campus, or, places you can bike to/from, but, IMHO, not worth the risk especially if you'll be traveling alone, often, and, early morning/late evening.

Patterson Park, Butcher's Hill, etc. They have a nice shuttle that goes many places (including those I listed) so get a map and look at the shuttle maps also to find the best areas.

5 AM to Hopkins main, you could easily walk from Butcher's Hill and Upper Fells. I lived on the 1900 Block of Lombard until last year. You wouldn't be the only one walked there then.
