I live right on Baltimore Street in the Patterson Park neighborhood near Butchers Hill if that helps to clarify matters. I also volunteer one night a week working with adults learning English. So I am familiar with the area mentioned by the poster. Butchers Hill and Patterson Park neighborhoods share much responsibility and have a lot in common including the welfare of the park in general.

priorities, values, and experience.
I think alot of Baltimoreans that are so defensive when experience or statistics are quoted, are blinded and entrenched in a lifestyle of compartmentalization. JUST LISTEN TO YOURSELVES! Who wants to live where you can't walk one block this way or one block that way without putting your life at stake??!! It boils down to priorities, values, and broadening your experience! Afterall, you don't miss what you've never experienced.
For my husband, myself, and my two young children an active "nightlife" isn't a priority. Living in a congested area for the social feel isn't a priority. We don't need to be able to walk to the corner liquor store, bar or grocery.
We are both well-educated business owners. We value a sense of community where you are friends with those who live around you, where our children can go outside to play, and I can take the trash out after dark and not worry about being mugged or raped! We enjoy our lives and use common sense. But, life is too short to constantly be on guard and fearful of what is around the corner!
Yes, it is true that "crime happens everywhere", however there are drastic differences between kids throwing toilet paper in your trees and murder. And to the person who responded to my previous post that all the areas I named were suburbs....yes, you are right....urban crime has spread with urban sprawl.
Based upon my priorities, values and experience, I decided Baltimore didn't offer enough to continue to put my life or my family's life in jeopardy any longer, and refused to live in fear. I was a crime statistic 3 times before I moved from B'more at the age of 29. And I've never in any way been associated with drugs or other criminal activity. Its a game of numbers....and the odds are against you in Baltimore.

I don't feel my life is in danger at all. In fact, I walk everyday and have never had an issue. I guess it depends on one's perspective. I have no desire to run to the suburbs of Georgia and am quite happy here. In fact, I have chosen to stay here rather than relocating to other cities.

Most sensible post I have read in a while. Everyone considering a move to Baltimore should read this. And thanks for quoting the post in your replies. People should read jena's post over and over.

I have been here for awhile now and I love it more the longer I stay. I'll take my chances with crime. I am a big boy and know that my safety is a concern wherever I am--city, country, or out-of-country. I suggest for all those folks who consistently rant about how horrible Baltimore City is to either move out to the burbs or move to another city and then be an expert on what truely is wrong with Baltimore. Believe me, there are tons of thousands of folks who chose to live in the city and truely love it.

yup..look at the Jena..she moved to GA
one question though to Bawler, if you hated Baltimore so much because of crimes and whatnot, why bother buying a house in Baltimore City? really
