In my zip code, according to the map, we've had two homicides...and one was in Federal Hill...interestingly enough.

I live in Parkvile too
I have lived in or around Parkville my entire life and I must say that within the past 5 years it has really gone down. The neighborhood can look nice for its affordability especially if your near villa cresta or park ave however, i can't say that it is the safest place to live. There are various drug dealers and addicts that live in the rental homes near by and for a while they were trading drugs in front of my house. One day it happened when my baby and I were outside, another time someone was picking up drugs when they had their own children with them. I finally called 311 and they said to call back when they are outside while it is happening. That is not easy to do when they walk trade hands and keep on going.. As well, we had our car stolen right out of our driveway a year ago and my neighbors was stolen just last week. The police say it is the kids from the high school located near Northern Parkway. It is a mess. I do want to feel safe where i live. I used to enjoy walks in the evening and now I feel unsafe even if i have my dog with me.

Also in Parkville
I agree, Limepetal. I've lived in Parkville for 20 yrs, having moved from Perry Hall as a young kid, and this neighborhood, along with the surrounding ones, has drastically declined. I've said before, it's the drugs, not the violent crime, that worries me in the county. Don't get me wrong, I know they usually go hand in hand, but the drugs are taking hold of the adolescent's so firmly and it just leads to so much more crime, esp. burglary. It has affected my family so much, along with every other family in my neighborhood.
It's just staggering how many of my classmates from high school are now dead or in jail due to drugs. I would say the more serious drugs really started saturating Parkville about 10-15 yrs. ago. At least, that's when I noticed all my former friends either dying or getting strung-out. It's very sad. I always thought I lived in a decent neighborhood with decent schools, but my husband and I are hoping to get out soon. We don't feel like our young girls are in eminent danger right now, but we certainly don't want them entering "teenagehood" around here!

I regret moving to Baltimore as well. I've been here for 3 months (moved from NYC) and at first thought it was a good place for me to raise my children. People treat me here horribly. They think Im an immigrant because I speak to my children in spanish. I was born in the US and lived part of my life in Puerto Rico. I speak both english and spanish equally. People are OK with me until they hear my speak to my children then everything changes. My husband has an accent when he speaks english and we have decided that when we need to do a transaction on the phone that I should speak, we get better service this way since I don't have a spanish accent when I speak english. I wish I was back in NYC. This place is full of racist and bigots. I have never lived in a place that is so racially segregated and the racial tension in the street is awful. Dont try to take public transportation near highschools. These children will run you down. I have literally had to grab my children and run because these highschoolers run towards the trains like a stampede. they don't care whether they knock you down or not. I hate this place and cringe everytime I have to leave the house for anything. I know Im getting, at the least, a disgusted look from someone once they hear me speak to my children. I dont even get me started on the employees at the DMV here, just disgusting. God help anyone who has to move here. Im here because of my husband's work. Yet Im seriously considering separating our family to save my children from this city. My oldest will have to go to school next year and I am terrified at the options. I cant afford to pay for school so he will have to go to public schools. If the adults in this city are so horrible to who they percieve as an immigrant this is the example they give to their children. I fear for my children's well being. My husband says they will just have to learn to defend themselves. Yet these children here in Baltimore are far from child's play. Last year a 17 yr old girl stabed another girl and killed her over a cell phone. She then left eating a sandwich she took from the dead girls purse. there is only so much God does to protect you. He gives you the information, and then you have to act. If you are in the wrong place then move along. If you are contemplating moving to the wrong place, don't. No job, money, home, car, etc is worth living in fear even when you are in your own home.

I feel for you
purusha -- I feel for you. But if various fears and phobias rule your life to that degree I would be remiss in not suggesting that you talk to someone who can help.

Yes, definitely move back to NYC where there are no bigots, no teens running for the trains, no rude DMV workers, and no crime. Oh, by the way, I lived in NYC--so this was a sarcastic response.

We moved to a lovely victorian townhouse in Mt. Vernon almost 1.5 years ago and have not had any problems.
It's fastastic to live in the cultural district and we commute to work in Washington DC... we love it.
Don't miss this neighborhood... lots to do, great restaurants... great city living.
Baltimore is a jaded, beautiful city ... and the Mt. Vernon neighborhood is a diamond in the rough! There are many young families not willing to give up on this city- we even have a brand new playground!

It's great that you love Mt. Vernon--I do too--but why do you keep posting this identical message on multiple threads?
