Scuder,
Your post is ridiculous. The fear of crime is something that effects everyone in Baltimore and is based on the probability of one becoming a victim. Unfortunately, the odds of being victimized in Baltimore are much greater than most of the places you list. To trivialize resident's by mocking their fears is just wrong.

It's nasty. I went to Loyola College, and lived in Charles Village for six months. After 9:00 pm, you simply did not go outside by yourself unless you had a death wish. It was like a vapor trail when I moved back to the Annapolis area. I couldn't escape fast enough. My wife, who is from Severna Park (Towson U.), will tell you the same thing. Robbed at gunpoint, held hostage, terrible.

Nope, it's not crazy, Baltimore is simply a dangerous place to live.

I've got to say, even if you aren't personally a victim of crime in Baltimore, you see its effects on th city everywhere, every day. During my time there I didn't know one person who didn't experience some kind of crime. Most of the time it was trivial....car stereos being stolen or the furniture in the yard disappearing. Other times it was much more serious.....home invasions, robberies, stabbings, kid nappings. Scary stuff. Of course, then you have people on this board who continually say that crime is normal and should be expected. I was one of them for a while. For me, it took getting out of Baltimore to realize just how crazy the crime is there. It's a shame because the city has so much potential.

Good Post Streetchie. What I find very interesting in reading numerous posts here is that there seems to be such a wide divergence of experiences. Like Streetchie, virtually everyone I know has been a victim or some criminal activity. Unfortunately much of it has been serious, but some has been more of the nuisance type crimes. I don't hang with a tough crowd, my neighbor is a Doctor and my friends and neighbors are professionals. Then on the other hand you read responses like "Bullcrap" and others who say they've lived here 20 years and never been victimized. Others say, not only have they not been a victim, but they don't even know anyone whose been a victim. Not sure how to reconcile those two points of view. I think, of course, that the statistics favor the group who says crime is very prevelant. But, what accounts for those folks who seem to become angered when it is suggested that there's a vcrime problem?

.....anf then there's the group of people who say they've never had a problem but, in reality, their homes have been broken into a number of times and drug dealers menace their neigborhoods. Its called denial.

I always wanted to live in San Diego, which definitely is out of my price range these days. Except that each January half of the place falls into the ocean in mud slides. Either way, you get mugged, as you would say.
