Default Looking to rent a house in a rural(ish) area

Hi. I'm looking for some advice on moving to Maryland. I currently live in Westchester NY in a converted barn at the edge of a nature preserve, next to a beautiful "gentleman's" farm. The roosters wake me in the morning, and bleating goats send me off on my way to work. I love living in this environment. I just got a job in Pikesville Maryland (Baltimore County, just outside the beltway) and am looking to live in a similarly rural"ish" and beautiful place. My preference would be to rent a 2 bedroom house with a commute to work of 45 min or less. On my list of "must have's" is room to garden, a wood stove (or at least a fireplace) and a washer/dryer. My max budget is $1,100. Some of the areas I have been looking at on-line are Hunt Valley, Sparks Glenco, Lutherville, Columbia, Ellicott City and Eldersburg. I have been scouring on-line sites and have not been finding anything in my price range. Am I way off the mark thinking I can find something for $1,100? Any other areas you think I should be considering? Any website you can recommend where individual homeowners might list their homes for rent? Craigslist found me my current oasis, and I had pinned high hopes on it for my MD search, but so far it has found me no options.

[Don't know if it matters, but I am a 35 year old single woman.]
Thanks so much for your help.
Rosella

Unlikely to find all that for 1100 unless you are willing to commute a ways. Look at Westminster and other parts of Carroll County, also into PA (Hanover area). This area is already chock full of long haul commuters so good luck.

Good advice. OP may need to look further west or north in Carroll County if land is needed. I would look into Silver Run or Taneytown. I would say that those areas are more true rural than ruralish, if that makes any sense.

Land value is very high in MD, esp in the areas you are looking at. Not likely at all you will find anything like you want, unless you are a very lucky person.

I would look towards Hampstead, Manchester and perhaps beyond. Those places you mentioned are certainly more expensive.

I am seconding Hampstead or further out in Carroll County. At $1100, a place would be snatched up quickly, or else it is run-down.

I think if there were one place in the Baltimore Metro that was actually commutable from Hampstead, Manchester, Hanover, etc, it would by the Pikesville or Owings Mills areas. 795 is no prize but to avoid the beltway is a plus. Still, I've been in bumper-to-bumper sprawl based traffic beside a cornfield before in northern Carroll County. It was almost laughable.

You may be able to find what you're looking for in the older part of Ellicott City where the mills used to work.

I don't know much about the area but if you go out Old Court Rd far enough, past Windsor Mill Rd, things start to get pretty country.
