Looking to be in Baltimore the weekend of May 11th to get a feel for the city and various neighborhoods, Mt. Vernon, Fells Point, etc.

Narrowed it down to Hilton Garden Inn, Home2 Suites, or Homewood Suites. Is there much difference between these?

I've stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn. Nice location with some good restuarants within walking distance. A movie theater right down the street. Irish pub across the street. Flemings Steak house around the corner. We walked through the inner harbor to a baseball game (took a cab back). The Homewood suites is basically in the same building, but instead of just a hotel room, they have a kitchen area and the continental breakfast is more extensive than the Garden Inn.

No real experience with them. But if you're willing to pay the full $130-140/night then you might find something like the Hotel Monaco around $130 at their best rate (despite quoted prices). That of course depends on the Yankees or Red Sox not being in town that weekend, and not a major convention. If hotels are pretty available you can get 2.5 stars near downtown on Priceline for more like $75. And if they're not free then you're not getting discounts anywhere. I'm just suggesting that you not accept the list prices.

$130? Just check Hotel Monaco and for the same dates it is $219 a night.

Right, I'm saying I've had a bit of experience with them (a wedding and other dates) and actual price has been well below list. If you called and they're not lower then it's probably a busy weekend, and you're not so likely to find discounts nearby either.

Maybe it is the time of year then as I tried the following weekend for the same room type and it quotes $280, and the weekend after that is $240, then $249 the first week in June. Thanks for the suggestion, now back to:

Monaco is great of you can find a deal. Most of their business is during the week so you might be able to negotiate.

Well, I tried, but the person I spoke with basically said their prices are the same as their website and only discounts were with something like AAA. If you know any better way to negotiate a deal with them let me know

However, the weekend I am looking at seems the cheapest for the next several weekends.

The Home2Suites would be within walking distance of the Mount Vernon neighborhood. The other two hotels are in Harbor East and would give you a good feel for that neighborhood. I would choose the one in the neighborhood that you think might be your first choice.

Problem is we plan on covering the entire area. Was more curious for the price, does any of them stand out as a nicer hotel?
