A failing school with low to non-existent admission standards is going to add a varsity football program. That would be a great step indeed.

Looking at the stats already in place, it actually would. A football team would keep about 80 guys in school and academically eligible. Sure, some will come and fail out, but sounds like that is a problem at the whole school. Coppin is also a place with not much tradition or school spirit. A football team could really help people with Coppin Pride. More people would want to join the band, the cheerleading squad, dance team, and hang around campus on the weekend.

The location alone is what made me not even consider it. A college, in the hood? Sounds like an oxymoron.

Plenty of colleges are located in less than less than stellar urban neighborhoods. Yale, Penn, etc.

Personally, I think Coppin and BCCC should join together and find their niche as a large community college that also offers bachelors degrees. Because an associates is absolutely useless in most fields.

There are plenty of colleges in bad areas throughout the country, but many times at least the campus feels like a nice place despite it surroundings. Coppin's campus isn't nice enough to survive it's settings. I hope the school improves, with the astronomical growth of teenagers and young adults in this country, higher education needs to get stronger and bigger.

Sounds like there is some redevelopment plans for that area for the first time in 50 years probably. Druid Heights is somewhat up and coming, Mondawmin has improved and the school has built some nice new buildings with more on the way. I think their future will improve, it's getting much tougher to get into the Towson and Morgans these days, hopefully Coppin will also benefit from that.

I attended the school starting in 2009 and I just transferred to Salisbury University for this fall and I couldn't have been more happier. Coppin is a troubled school that is not only failing the students it enrolls but the community around it as well. While schools like Morgan, Johns Hopkins and Towson have changed the surrounding community, Coppin has done nothing of the such. Sure they put in the PEC and HHSB, but that hasn't done anything to help change the community.

The only redeeming quality of Coppin is the professors who seem to actually care about the students and some of them actually go out of their way to ensure you pass and have success in college and beyond. But that is the ONLY thing that is good about Coppin.

Seriously though, Coppin State is a joke and a mess; either fix the school or shut it down.
The changes surrounding Johns Hopkins are surface deep only. A lot of those houses they built with flashy new appliances are sitting empty. Morgan and Towson for what it's worth are surrounded by relatively middle class areas.

Coppin I thought was improving somewhat. Maybe it's time to close it down.

Howard's administration has been awful, they are disorganized, unprofessional, and unproductive. I'm not sure how it is today, but when I was going there, we actually made the news for protest that were staged against the administration.
Curious such as what? I went to Morgan and most students thought of Coppin as the "ghetto" school. Which is ironic since Morgan isn't much to write home about either.

Coppin has a not for profit development corporation that has been acquiring property around the school for redevelopment.. I think that many colleges always struggle with 'town and gown' issues whether they are a Coppin in West Baltimore or Towson U in Towson, MD.. IN Coppins case its a balancing act.. since some residents are always fearful of the area being "redeveloped" which may mean to them.. new buildings and amenities minus them. Sure unlike East Baltimore.. the area around Coppin would likely be met with much less resistance.. but the concerns still linger. I imagine that Coppin being an HBCU that long been in the community has developed outreach programs over the years that include the surrounding neighborhoods so I would guess that the relationship is stronger there. As far as academics.. I have no clue.. but there has been millions dumped into it for a new Athletic Center and I believe a new Science Center (or additional classrooms) are proposed for a site on North Ave.

I hope that they take over the old DMV and build a bridge over to it which would also improve its connectivity with Mondawmin.

It would also be interesting to see it coordinate more with BCCC (if they dont do it already) give both schools proximity and the ease with which someone could go from a community college to a four year institution.

I'm a CSU alum so I'll add my two cents
I majored in marketing and I graduated w/2 internships in my field
I encountered a lot of people who were only in college because they were told to go. Not because they wanted to be there. Many people didnt master basic algebra concepts, but I completed ap calculus. i had seniors in my freshman bio class who said they didnt learn anything in hs bio. I was so confused! I agree w/the poster who says that it is a continuation of hs. Only due to the types of students it admits. THey arent ready for college level work!
