"as long as the Downtown is stable and growing it doesn't matter what the rest of the city does"

*That is a sad statement! Eff the rest of the city right? These mongrels don't matter because they are poor, don't vote, either they're on drugs or violent right?!!

The Downtown is very easy to mold and build in ,its attractive for the younger generations and older generations....and thats the 2 groups you focus on. Not the people with children...thats a whole different story....and a harder one to over come but it can be done.

You are correct, telecommunications are less expensive in Europe. In some places one can get a landline with unlimited calls, even unlimited calls to North America, a cell phone, cable TV with a lot of channels, and high speed internet all for less than $100 a month. That is a good deal, but one shouldn't be so envious because everything else, and I mean EVERYTHING else is more expensive than here in the US. Housing, new cars, used cars, gas, food, public transportation, appliances, home electronics, taxes, you name it, it all costs more, sometimes a lot more. Those people who preach how wonderful life abroad is always tell you how reasonably priced telecommunications are because everything else is so high.

This news story is a couple months old:

Japan offers to lend US half the cost of 'Super Maglev' train between Washington and Baltimore - Telegraph

Essentially, Japan is offering to build a MAGLEV for half the cost. It would take 15 minutes from Baltimore to DC.

As a person living over here in Asia, they have bullet trains all over Japan, Korea, and now China as well. Europe has so many as well. It just feels like the U.S. is so far behind in this category, for being a developed country.

The US is more of a very rich banana republic than a developed country.

Umm.....are they offering to pay for half of it? Or offering to lend us the money to build half? There is a pretty big difference.

Maybe it doesn't matter...

There is a dialog in China to build a bullet train connecting China with the U.S...

China is reportedly thinking about building a bullet train that reaches America – Quartz

As a person living over here in Asia, and right now I'm in China. The subways and bullet trains are all over the fricking place in this country. Just as they were in Japan and Korea.
