I think this board is divided -- people who should live in a city and people who should live in the suburbs. City people know what to expect, suburban people expect the unrealistic and then do nothing but complain about it.
Baltimore is a terrific city. Culturally diverse, friendly people, and tons of interesting places to see and fun things to do. Is it a perfect suburban utopia? God no. Then again, if it was, most of us would probably move. |

Is Bawlmore safe? Nope. Has not been safe for a long while nor will be until the left of center thought process is defeated in the city government. Bawlmore is not alone in this arena, all you need to do is follow any city in America who has a government of this ilk.
Bawlmore Washington DC Atlanta New Orleans Camden etc. Though I'm not a Rudy fan for President, you can say he cleaned up NYC, by cracking down, Period. NYC went from one of America's most dangerous cities in the WORLD, to the safest city. It takes strong leadership, something Bawlmore, nor the above listed and many others do not have and for some reason, scared as hell to attempt to have. With this said, Charm City is a great city overall, history galore, the Bay, and most of all, the best darn crab cakes in the country! So, like anywhere just be alert, be safe, and be aware of your surroundings and you will be fine. |

To just say that BALTimore is NOT safe is a generalization. There are certain areas, that yes, not very safe. But since the day I have lived here, I haven't had a problem, nor have I felt unsafe. Being aware is important, and I am very aware of my surroundings and don't go walking around very often at night by myself, but I wouldn't do that very often in NYC either. Crime still happens there, it's just that they have a higher population, so they're murders per capita isn't as high as Baltimore's.

I wouldn't walk around in the dark in most places. That's just asking for trouble, no matter where you live.
Baltimore is a very safe city if you use common sense. |

I don't. That kind of attitude is why people don't do well in cities and shouldn't live here. I enjoy seeing them leave, frankly. Opens up the potential for new and friendly neighbors/customers.

I worked in Baltimore City for a number of years and lived in Elkridge, Howard County, south of the city. The city is just a hopeless quagmire of corruption, crime, over taxation, and moral leprosy. The vast majority of Marylanders vote Democratic. Because of this voting habit, the people of Maryland have rendered themselves irrelevant. When everyone votes for one party, regardless of who that party runs, the party and not the people have the say. That being the case, I decided the only recourse was to leave. Young people like to be urban, where the action is. There is plenty to do and lots of socializing in any number of other cities across the nation. Go somewhere else where you will be appreciated and be safer. Baltimore and Democratic Party of Maryland don't care about you and don't care of you die through their neglect of the City of Baltimore.

Yes you had Rober Ehrlich, however, during his tenure he was faced with a veto proof Democrat controlled Senate (33 D : 14 R) and a veto proof Democrat House ( 98 D : 43R) Not to worry though the current Gov is solid all around so get ready for the tax and spend ways to come around again. Kind of reminds me of ole William Donald. Sorry, back to Baltimore and Topic: When down in Bawlmore, just go to Gunnings or G&M's for some old fashioned crab cakes, Mmmmmm! |

I've read a lot of these threads and feel like you need to hear another perspective. City life can be challenging, but it also can be very rewarding. I've lived all over the place and chose to move back to Baltimore. I live in Fells Point and love it. Yes, there is crime, scarce parking and high taxes, but it is a very welcoming place with a lot of fun festivals and activities. About the crime issue, it's really important to know your neighbors and look out for each other. I know more of my neighbors here then anywhere else I've lived. People are pretty friendly--we have neighborhood cookouts and other events that gives you an opportunity to get to know your neighbors.
